synthetase
An enzyme, regardless of its mechanism, that couples two substrates by a carbon-carbon, carbonoxygen, carbon-sulphur or carbon-nitrogen bond that is driven by the hydrolysis of a phosphoanhydride bond, e.g. amino acyl-tRNA synthetase, fatty acyl-CoA synthetase. Those enzymes that catalyse such syntheses and do not use the energy of a phosphoanhydride bond are synthases (despite their frequently being misnamed).
