Груз можно классифицировать в зависимости от конструкции самого судна и требуемого погрузочно-разгрузочного оборудования в портах и на судне. Основные категории:
- наливной груз
- сухой навалочный груз
- контейнеры
- груз для горизонтальной обработки (ро-ро) (самоходные единицы)
- груз для горизонтальной обработки (ро-ро) (несамоходные единицы)
- прочий генеральный груз.
